Pied Piper wins first Great Lakes 70 regatta
2001 Season
Chicago - Dick Jennings and the Pied Piper crew pulled on local knowledge to handle the tricky conditions and win the Chicago NOOD regatta June 15-17, which is the first regatta of the Great Lakes 70 season championship.
Racing got under way on Friday with blustery winds and cloudy skies caused by a passing cold front. In gusty, shifty southwest winds blowing at 15-20 knots the 10 Great Lakes 70s raced two races on Lake Michigan. In race one, Evolution caught a nice right hand shift on the first downwind leg to get out in front to win. Dick Jennings' Pied Piper, which led at the first windward mark, hung on for second. Stripes took third. After a long race delay as the front finally passed over, the southwest breeze returned and those 70s that went right up the first beat were rewarded with big leads at the first windward mark. It was tough going to hang on to them, though, as the wind shifted and went light each time the boats approached the leeward mark. Holua won, but Pied Piper racked up another second to put her in the lead for the overall regatta. Equation took third.
Saturday's racing proved even more challenging as the southwest winds, which varied between 10 and 20 knots, often shifted 30 degrees. Staying in phase with the shifts made the critical difference, with each of the boats having a moment in the sun only to go from first to last with next shift.
"I had to congratulate the race committee at the end of the day for making it as fair as they could make it," Dick Jennings said. "It was a real crap shoot out there."
The class didn't hold anything back, and even managed to get a general recall. The big winners on Saturday were Holua in race one and Pied Piper in race two.
Sunday saw a big high pressure settle in, but by midmorning a decent 10-knot southerly sea breeze built, providing the most consistent wind of the regatta. The final race also saw some of the closest racing all weekend, with the class parading into the windward mark from the port tack layline. Windancer won the final race, but it was the Pied Piper crew's consistency, totaling up only 12 points, that put them in the top spot for the regatta.
The Great Lakes 70 class championship continues with the Chicago Yacht Club's Race to Mackinac, the Bacardi Bayview Mackinac Race, Bay Harbor Regatta and the Verve Cup.
