GL70 Series Wrap-Up
Great Lakes 70s Conclude Season in Style - Holua wins GL70 Season Championship
The Great Lakes 70s are proud to award the Season Championship to Peter Thornton and the crew of Holua. Holua had a spectacular season winning the Chicago NOOD, Bay Harbor and Verve Cup regattas. Holua’s speed was evident to all as she won the Class in the Chicago to Mackinac and placing second in the Bayview Mackinac race
Though Holua secured first place in the class prior to the Verve Cup the race for second place for the season was not determined until the last race of the Verve. Evolution, owned by Terry Kohler and Peter Reichelsdorfer protected her two-point lead over John Nedeau’s Windancer to secure second place with Windancer taking third only three points behind.
The Great Lakes 70s 2003 season championship was comprised of the Chicago NOOD, Chicago to Mackinac, Bayview-Mackinac, Bay Harbor regatta and the Chicago Verve Cup. For the 2003 season the Great Lakes 70s arranged for racing the NOOD, Bay Harbor and Verve on their own private circle. The Class also brought in their own professional race committee to run these races. As a result the Class enjoyed unobstructed racing between as many as 11 boats with overlapped roundings and finishes. The Great Lakes 70s race championship races under the IMS handicap and boat for boat as well as corrected finishes were often determined by just seconds
GL70 Offshore Series Wrap-Up
Offshore Season Shows Promise - Colt 45 wins inaugural GL70 Offshore Season Championship
The Great Lakes 70s are proud to name Alan Fletcher and the crew of Colt 45 the 2003 Offshore Champion. Colt 45 focused on port to port races in 2003 and scored class wins in the Bayview to Mackinac, Queen’s Cup and Trans-Superior. Colt 45 was also the overall winner of the Trans-Superior.
2003 was the first year for the Great Lakes 70s Offshore Championship. GL 70s could accumulate points in the Waukegan to Chicago, Queen’s Cup, Chicago-Mackinac, Bayview-Mackinac, Trans-Superior and the first leg of the Tri-State races. The boats were re-scored under IMS in the races that were sailed under the PHRF handicap system. The winner was determined by the lowest score in a minimum of four races allowing for as many as two throw-out races.
Trans-Superior Race
Colt 45 Wins Trans-Superior
Alan Fletcher's Colt 45 scored first in class and first overall in the 2003 Trans-Superior Race. This puts Colt 45 clearly in the lead for the inaugural GL70s Offshore Championship. Congratulations to Alan and crew. Stripes took second in class and overall as well.

SSYC Queens Cup
Colt 45 Takes Class in Queen’s Cup
The Great Lakes 70 Colt 45 owned by Alan Fletcher of Alpena, Michigan won Section One in the 2003 Queen’s Cup. Colt 45 prevailed over a competitive section of boats ranging from the Tripp 40 J-Swift, to the brand new Andrews 77 Alchemy. The night race from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Muskegon, Michigan offered a wide spectrum of conditions including a pre-start squall, followed by conditions that demanded spinnakers while running, jib tops while reaching, and jibs for a beat to the finish.
Colt 45 also bested two of her Great Lakes 70s class members, Windancer and Mirage respectively. This is the fifth time in the last six races that a GL 70 has won its class in the Queen’s Cup. Past winners are Nitemare (2002), Mirage (2000 and 2001), and Equation (1998).
Colt 45 traveled all the way from Alpena for the race and departed from the Muskegon Yacht Club early Sunday after enjoying the hospitality of the club and its members. Owner Alan Fletcher summed up the race as follows: “This was a long way to come for a race, but winning will make the trip home considerably more enjoyable. The South Shore Yacht Club folks put on a great race and the Muskegon Yacht Club was a great host for the finish.” Colt 45's next race is the Chicago to Mackinac, July 12th. The Great Lakes 70s Mackinac class will be 11 strong and will be among the leaders and first to finish the race.
MYC Tripp Memorial
Windancer Wins Tripp Memorial
The Great Lakes 70 Windancer hailing from Muskegon, Michigan and owned by John Nedeau won the 2003 Tripp Memorial race. Windancer trimmer Jim Key explained that Lake Michigan’s cold water created an advantage for Windancer. “The wind was up off of the water and our mast head showed an excess of 20 knots of breeze for much of the race. The waves were more consistent with about 10 knots of wind, so with Windancer having the tallest rig in the race we had an advantage that we gladly took advantage of.” Windancer held high off of the start in Muskegon, digging as far south as the wind would allow and positioning herself well south in the event of a later shift. This tactic paid off later in the evening as the wind became more Westerly, forcing many of the yachts to tack for the finish in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Windancer, without having to tack, finished off of the south pier head in Milwaukee just after 1:30 AM Central Time.
Chicago NOOD Regatta
Holua Wins Great Lakes 70 2003 NOOD
Eight Great Lakes 70 lined up and did battle on the skyline of Chicago, enjoying fresh northerly breezes and close racing in the Chicago NOOD regatta. The deep blue Great Lakes 70 Holua, owned by Peter Thornton of Hinsdale, Illinois, used impressive speed and strong tactics in scoring bullets in four of the five races. In fact, Holua lead at each mark of the regatta, with the exception of the fourth race that she had to restart after being called over early by the race committee.
Windancer, owned by John Nedeau of Muskegon, Michigan used her six-second margin of victory in race four to break a tie for second place with Evolution. Evolution, hailing from Cheboygan, Wisconsin and owned by Terry Kohler and Peter Reichelsdorfer finished the regatta tied with Windancer. Windancer’s narrow victory over Evolution in the fourth race is reflective of the close racing the in the Great Lakes 70s class and was the determining factor in breaking the tie.
Though fog caused an abandonment of racing on Friday, the Great Lakes 70 used Friday afternoon to kick off the 2003 season with a crew and friends party on the bow of the Columbia Yacht Club. Sailnet.com and Harken sponsored the party that was appreciated and enjoyed by many. Pulse water also provided hydration for the GL 70’s crews by provisioning each GL 70 with their nutrient water for the regatta.
The next race in the schedule for the Great Lakes 70s season championship is the Chicago to Mackinac race, July 12th. The Great Lakes 70s will kick off their Offshore Championship this coming Saturday, June 21st in with the Chicago to Waukegan race.
