GL70 End Of Season News
Evolution Wins 2004 Season Championship
Evolution owned by Peter Reichelsdorfer and Terry Kohler won the 2004 Great Lakes 70s season championship on the strength of a strong finish in the season's last regatta sailed in Waukegan, Illinois. Evolution saved their best two races for last, running away with bullets in both and putting enough boats between themselves and Pied Piper, owned by Dick and Jack Jennings, to draw even in points with Pied Piper for the season standings. By virtue of the tie breaking system, Evolution wins the season trophy followed by Pied Piper and Mirage.
Nitemare Wins 2004 GL 70 Offshore Trophy
Tom Neill and his team aboard the Nitemare won the 2004 Offshore trophy capitalizing on their win in the Chicago to Mackinac and strong finishes in the Bayview Mackniac and Queen's Cup. The GL 70 Offshore trophy is awarded to the GL 70 with the best finishes in four of the following races. Casino Classic, Queen's Cup, Bayview Mackinac, Chicago to Mackinac, and the first leg of the Tri State. Though many of these races are raced under other rating systems, the GL 70s rescore the races under IMS. Colt 45 won the trophy in 2003. The 2005 series will include the Trans Superior.
Blondie Sets Elapse Record in 1st Leg of Tri State Race
Paul Samman and his team aboard the GL 70 Blondie set the elapse time record from Chicago to St. Joe Michigan on the first leg of the Tri-State race, breaking the record set in 2003 by Bert D'Otavio's Thirsty Tiger. Yet another elapse time record for the Great Lakes 70s Class.

Following the Mackinacs the GL70 fleet gathered at Bay Harbor for the Bay Harbor Regatta on Little Traverse Bay. It was two days of intense racing with high winds testing gear and crews on the first day and very light shifty conditions on the second day. In the end Tom Neill's Nitemare posted a very consistent record to win the regatta. In a very tight battle for 2nd and 3rd, Mirage edged out Stripes.
GL70 Chicago Mackinac
Congratulations to Tom Neill and the crew of Nitemare in their Chicago win!
It was an unusual upwind start for the 2004 Chicago Mackinac with the GL70 fleet going farther up the Wisconsin shore than most can remember in along time. On Sunday morning, the fleet crossed the lake and entered the Manitou Passage late that day. From there it was light downwind running to the finish with the fleet finishing on Monday afternoon.

GL70 Port Huron Mackinac
Congratulations to Bill Martin and the crew of Stripes in their Port Huron win!
After a delayed start due to light winds, the GL70 fleet got underway with the 2004 Port Huron Mackinac. The fleet left Port Huron on a beat towards the NGS mark near Southampton, Ontario. The fleet rounded the NGS buoy early on Sunday morning closely bunched between 6:27 AM and 7:39 AM.
The segment from the NGS buoy towards Mackinac Island began as a tight reach and then turned back into a beat. Most boats never hoisted a spinnaker for the entire race.
Alan Fletcher’s Colt 45 was first to finish for the class, closely followed by Terry Kohler’s Evolution, Peter Thornton’s Holua and Bill Martin’s Stripes. The rest of the fleet finished within the next few hours. Bill Martin’s Stripes was first place on corrected time followed by Colt 45 and Holua.
Because the GL70 fleet races under IMS, they were not included in overall scoring for the Southampton course. Comparing the corrected times of the GL70 fleet with those of the remainder of the fleet shows that all the GL70s would have corrected at the top of the fleet.
