Pororocora Takes First in 2006 Queen’s Cup, Section 1

Gene McCarthy and Rober Zeeman Jr., of Chicago, Illinois and owners of the Great Lakes 70 Pororoca won Section 1 of the 2006 Queen’s Cup run June 30th from Milwaukee Wisconsin to Grand Haven Michigan. Pororoca finished crossed the finish line third, ten minutes behind fellow class boats Windancer (John Nedeau, Muskegon, MI) and Holua (Brack Duker, Los Angles, CA). Pororoca not only saved her time on Windancer and Holua, but also saved her time on a diverse Section 1 of boats including the One Design 48 Wild Horses, the Nelson-Merek 53 (nee Ptargriman) and many other fine racing yachts.

Windancer and Holua waged their own battle for first to finish honors over the entire 68 miles. Windancer edged out Holua for first to finish honors finishing just before 2:00 AM, nearly a minute and a half in front of Holua. “It seemed like we were never more than a couple boat lengths apart for the entire crossing.” Stated Windancer’s owner, John Nedeau. “Before the race we discussed positioning ourselves South of the competition and that may have been the difference in the end.” Nedeau acknowledged that Holua utilized the race to experiment with speed and made a number of sail changes. “The boat is new to them and they are experimenting a bit. Their changes definitely helped us get ahead”
